"There's a boy with bat wings on my couch; could I borrow a cup of O positive?"

Valor Lucia Noir Book 1 eBook Marie Sioux

It was good but not great. Might even give it a 3 1/2.
Ramiro is an old vampire, yet he has been imprisoned for 40 years. He is running away from an entity/person. Lucia's dog attacks him on the street and so she feels responsible for him in someway. She invites him into her home and from there we find out a little about the paranormal world Ramiro is a part of. It seems 1/2 the myths involving vampires hold true and the other half don't. She doesn't go over all of them but for spoilers see below.(view spoiler) So she has her own vampire world. Most authors do make exceptions to the lore and make their world theirs but she seems to try to stay to the myth in may ways and then go off it in others but without explanation. The intravampire relations is very glossed over with the statement that old vampires are stronger. I never got why some old vampires pray on the younger, and why they don't just kill them. This was just too glossed over for me. Also what exactly is the person/entity that is pursuing Ramiro. Spoiler below.

So not so excited about the world but the relationship was sweet. I liked Aaron too, he was a nice add in. Why do we get the only two nice vampires there are? Maybe it's not the case but it sure seems like it. Spoiler on this below. Overall I enjoyed the book but didn't think it great. The world is lacking and needs building, in the area of vampire relations and other creatures of power, and their histories. I did like her version of vampires and their looks.

Spoilers ******************************
The myths that are followed or not--
They don't show up in mirrors, they must be invited in a home, they can eat but it isn't nutritious, they only need to feed twice a week to stay satisfied, can go many weeks without dying a permanent death but will crave, have no problem with garlic, can go out during the day but need a good sunscreen and will get burnt. They have no problem with religious objects or places. Along with that they are devil like in appearance in their own form even with wings and pointy ears, and on top of that can shapeshift, the older they are the better at it with more forms.

I get that the person/entity pursuing Ramiro is pulling life force from the vampires in some way but... how, what is he that he can do this? How it effects him is glossed over too, he seems immune to some of the vampire's limits but not others.

Other vampires that are in the book an old vampire that attacks, and just seems to want to hurt Ramiro and Lucia. Aaron's maker used him just as a power play and chew toy with no benefit.

Valor Lucia Noir Book 1 eBook Marie Sioux Reviews

This book is a gentle introduction to a story and the characters who will be bringing that story to you. The author doesn't hit you with everything but the kitchen sink within the first few pages. She allows you to meet and grow comfortable with the main characters while providing a view of what the future can be for them. She provides supporting characters that you really want to know more about. I have read many action and red hot sex right out of the gate type of vampire books. Marie Sioux knows how to tie a little reality into her fantasy. And I love it. I love it that this is a meal to be enjoyed and not rushed through. I love it that I can still see the love connection building at the end of the 1st book and that I'm not asking myself "What's left for them to do? Use a trapeze?"
I also love that the "hero" has weaknesses. That he isn't the strongest or oldest or the most composed. That he can get embarrassed, play monopoly, and like the black and white version of Casablanca instead of the updated colored version.
It makes me want to know him. I like the heroine because she lives alone with a dog. Like me. She has compassion, insecurities, jealousy, and puts herself between evil and someone she cares about. And does that even when not a radical bad ass wearing leather, hung with knives, swords and guns.
The author also has done a good job on the canine character. She either did a lot of research or has first hand knowledge on training working dogs. I will be getting the next books just to see what Argos does in his changed state.
Other readers may disagree with how the vampire is characterized. As I have not met a vampire, I leave that to the author. The author can create any type of vampire they want. I don't believe the writer has to stick to common myths.
There were a few times while reading that I found hiccups in the story line. Like how little time it took to change to a vampire. Or how exactly the bad guy found them. Things were left vague that should have been tightened up so it was clear to the reader. I choose to ignore these.
I recommend this book. It is a nice change of pace from the thrill a minute, bonded mate, blow it up, burn it down, end of the world as we know it kind of books. Not that I don't like those and won't continue reading them. It is just good to have an author who adds variety to the mix. And does it pretty well.
